"The community must look after their school because a school is an investment in the life of each and every child.”
The Premier of the Northern Cape, Zamani Saul, has pleaded with the community of the John Toalo Gaetsewe District in Kuruman to protect school infrastructure.
Accompanied by the MEC for Education, Zolile Monakali, Saul officially handed over the newly constructed Wrenchville Primary School and the Khiba Middle School on Friday.
The rebuilding of both schools cost the government R168 million. Saul said Wrenchville cost R74 million to rebuild, while Khiba cost the government R95 million.
In January 2022, the Northern Cape government revealed that at least 39 schools were vandalised over the festive season. Saul pleaded with parents and community members to guard schools against vandalism.
“The community is expected to look after the school, it’s not supposed to have a boundary fence and there’s not supposed to be security at schools. The community must look after their school because a school is an investment in the life of each and every child.”
Monakali said the provincial government has placed education as the centre of the rebuilding process in the province. This is as they attempt to "build a modern growing and successful province". He reiterated the importance of building schools and said it would go a long way in assisting with skills needed in their vision of rebuilding the province.
