As the class of 2023's final examinations continue, four learners in the Free State have been caught with materials not allowed in the examination room.

Education department spokesperson Howard Ndaba says two learners were found with cellphones during their exam, while another two were found with crib notes.

Without making mention of the schools in question, he added investigations are currently underway. Once the investigations have been concluded, those involved will be subjected to formal disciplinary hearings.

In the North West, an unknown number of matric learners were found in possession of crib notes just before their final exams began.

MEC for education in the North West, Viola Motsumi, requested all learners to focus on their studies and avoid any activities that could jeopardize their results.

This, as some learners fell ill before their exam and were rushed to hospital. The department in the province has introduced measures for the affected learners to write while they are in hospital.

An outbreak of measles has been confirmed at the Phillipvale Primary School in Phillipstown, Northern Cape.

Education Department spokesperson Geoffrey van der Merwe says the school will be temporarily closed for at least five days for disinfection and to limit further virus transmission.

The school temporary closure follows a discussion with the department of health in the area and a confirmation of 26 cases of measles from the Masibambane clinic.
