"Khulumani Support Group entered into an agreement with Sibanye-Stillwater in 2020 to repatriate sick or deceased foreign employees to their home countries."
Two foreign nationals are expected to appear before the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday (12/2), after they were arrested on suspicion of defrauding Sibanye-Stillwater mine out of R800,000.
Hawks North West spokesperson Amogelang Malwetse said Khulumani Support Group entered into an agreement with Sibanye-Stillwater in 2020 to repatriate sick or deceased foreign employees to their home countries. Under the agreement, Khulumani would pay for the repatriation and Sibanye-Stillwater would reimburse the civil society organisation for its costs.
‘The fraudulent activities were detected and reported to the Hawks’
Malwetse said that one of the committee members responsible for submitting claims on behalf of mineworkers allegedly submitted several with fraudulent death certificates. These fake claims amounted to R800,000.
The member used an accomplice's bank account to transfer funds, but the fraudulent activities were detected and reported to the Hawks.
After an investigation by the Hawks’ serious corruption investigation team, two suspects aged 43 and 46 were arrested in Rustenburg on Friday (9/2) and charged with fraud.
