The first phase of construction of a sidewalk footpath, connecting the Meyerton CBD, areas up to the Golf Park, and to the Riverstone Mall, is anticipated to be completed by Monday, 30 June.

The project forms part of the municipality’s commitment to improving the infrastructure that enables all its residents to move around in a safe, accessible, and sustainable manner.

The project will involve installing pavement blocks, kerbing, and commercial G5 material for the base layer, as well as box-cutting the current gravel shoulders for spoil.

“The footpath will improve pedestrian safety and provide a safer, more convenient route for cyclists travelling in the area,” said Midvaal municipal spokesperson Idah Satikhe. “This footpath development is one of several infrastructure upgrades currently underway and is a key step in our ongoing efforts to revitalise our town.”

“The second phase of the project, which is expected to commence in the new financial year, pending budget availability, will connect the Kookrus and Rothdene areas.”

The project employed a total of eight workers, two local Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises were appointed for paving and kerb-laying, and six workers were hired by the main contractor.

The Riverstone Mall in Meyerton was opened in April, and it created 1,200 jobs during the construction phase, and another 250 permanent jobs were expected once it starts trading.

Checkers Fresh-X, Woolworths Food and Dis-Chem are the mall’s anchor stores, while Clicks, Truworths, Mr Price and the Pepkor group are among the other tenants. The mall has two drive-through restaurants, a food court, and more than a thousand parking spaces.

The opening of the mall was postponed due to tenants’ inventory being damaged by flooding following a cloudburst. The excessive water caused a buildup of debris, consisting of sand, rocks, and sticks, that obstructed a stormwater drain near the Checkers entrance.

The water backed up and entered the main walkway area, as well as the shops closest to the entrance.

A 5.0 MWh battery, one of the biggest of its kind in South Africa, has been installed in the mall as part of a hybrid energy solution, according to Ivan Pretorius, the founder and CEO of Alley Roads.

The mall can continue to run in the evenings and bad weather, thanks to the battery.
