The North West Department of Education has called on parents, communities, and school management teams to actively support Grade 12 learners after the annual matric winter camps officially started on Tuesday (1/7).

The programme forms part of the province’s broader effort to bolster academic performance and improve matric outcomes.

A total of 124 winter camps have been set up, catering to 31,159 matriculants. These camps are strategically designed to help learners revise core subject material and address any existing learning gaps ahead of the crucial final examinations, said Education spokesperson Mphata Molokwane.

The initiative offers both residential and walk-in camp formats to accommodate diverse learner needs.

“These camps operate in two formats, namely residential and walk-in, where 112 centres are residential, providing full-day academic support with overnight accommodation, while twelve centres function as walk-in camps, where learners return home after lessons.”

To ensure learner safety and well-being, schools have taken proactive steps by coordinating with nearby clinics and hospitals for emergency support services throughout the camp period.

More than opportunities for revision

Education MEC Viola Motsumi reiterated the department’s dedication to academic excellence.

“Winter camps are more than just revision. They are a critical intervention to ensure that no learner is left behind.

“We do this with the purpose of closing learning gaps and building confidence before year-end exams. We applaud all our educators and support teams who are working tirelessly during the winter break.”

Newly appointed Superintendent-General Lengane Bogatsu reaffirmed the department’s vision, emphasising the importance of learner-focused support. “As I mentioned in my introductory speech, one of my key focus areas as I assume office is to intensify the department’s learner support mechanisms. Winter camps are a vital tool in improving results.

“They offer learners the opportunity to engage meaningfully with subject content in a focused environment, away from distractions. This is the kind of academic discipline we want to nurture.”

The matric winter camps will continue until 18 July, giving learners nearly three weeks of structured academic support during the winter break. The department has encouraged all stakeholders to rally behind the initiative and ensure learners receive the support they need during this critical stage of their academic journey.
