The police in the Northern Cape are making a call to action, urging all community members to speak out against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) and report incidents to law enforcement.

This appeal comes as the police reaffirms its unwavering commitment to fostering a safe and secure environment for all residents, emphasising that this crucial goal requires the active participation of individuals and communities.

While acknowledging the understandable hesitation victims often face, the police stresses the paramount importance of reporting these crimes. “It is crucial to report these crimes so that investigations can be initiated,” said Sgt. Molefi Shemane.

According to him, all information provided is treated with the strictest confidentiality, ensuring the safety and privacy of those who come forward. “Perpetrators found violating protection orders will face immediate arrest.”

Specialised Resources

The police have established specialised resources to assist victims.

To handle cases involving domestic violence and sexual offences, detectives from the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Units receive specialised training. “They are committed to ensuring that victims receive the necessary support, including medical assistance and counselling,” said Shemane.

The police reports that GBV desks have been set up at police stations to further assist victims, offering targeted and compassionate support from highly trained staff. Furthermore, police facilities offer victim-friendly rooms  – quiet, safe areas where survivors of sexual offences, domestic violence, child abuse, and gender-based violence can make statements in a soothing and supportive environment.

Awareness Campaigns

Beyond immediate support, the police, through its FCS Units, regularly conducts community engagements, Imbizos, and awareness campaigns to educate the public and raise awareness about GBVF and related issues.

“Investigating officers also work in close collaboration with prosecutors to ensure successful convictions, bringing perpetrators to justice,” said Shemane.

The Police Women’s Network and Men for Change collaborate with NGOs to support abuse victims, including providing safety guidelines such as applying for protection orders, avoiding confrontations, and keeping essential items close at hand.

“Do not remain silent. Be the eyes and ears of your community. Stand up and act against GBVF,” said Shemane.

If you or someone you know is a victim of GBVF, report it immediately to your nearest police station, call SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or use the MySAPS App.
