Bloemfontein’s Crystal Lake Publishing shines on global stage─── REFILWE BEKANE 16:30 Wed, 23 Jul 2025
Bloemfontein’s own Joe Mynhardt, founder and CEO of Crystal Lake Publishing, recently took centre stage as an international VIP guest at the prestigious Horror on Main convention in June (27 to 29 June) in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA.
Mynhardt was the only publisher invited to this high-profile event and the only overseas VIP.
Film directors, actresses, best-selling authors, and comic book artists from all over the entertainment industry were among the outstanding group of people who attended the convention. The focus was on how stories can seamlessly transition from books into comics, games, film, television, and other media, an area where Crystal Lake Publishing is rapidly expanding its reach.

“Being there was amazing, and I think everyone had a lot of fun meeting a South African,” said Mynhardt. The event saw influential figures from iconic horror franchises like The Walking Dead, Friday the 13th, Pet Sematary, and IT in attendance, all networking and collaborating across mediums.
Mynhardt’s biggest takeaway from the convention was the confirmation that Crystal Lake Publishing is on the right track by tapping into what he describes as a passion for people. “Our main focus now is really building that community,” said Mynhardt.
This includes a rebranding of their YouTube channel, which will feature dedicated segments on movies, books, games, and “shadows and creatives” on Fridays, interviewing industry professionals.
Looking ahead, Crystal Lake Publishing is also venturing into children’s content, aiming to encourage reading and writing through adventure stories with a touch of fear factor to prepare kids for life’s challenges.
Mynhardt plans to collaborate with early childhood development specialists and social workers to craft content that aligns with children’s learning needs, offering not just books but also downloadable content and worksheets for developing their skills. For adults, a month-long online short story workshop is planned for August, focusing not only on writing but also on public speaking and story presentation.
“We want even adults not to just become better authors but to learn other skills they can use in their careers,” said Mynhardt. Mynhardt’s ultimate goals include delving into animation, expanding into board games, and digitalising their extensive body of work.
