Condolences continue to pour in following the death of a Grade 10 learner from Huhudi Secondary School in Ganyesa, about 75 km northwest of Vryburg.

The learner passed away on Friday (8/8) after experiencing a sudden medical emergency during school hours. She collapsed at school, prompting immediate action by the school principal, said education spokesperson Mphata Molokwane.

The learner’s parents were contacted without delay, and an ambulance was summoned. While waiting for emergency medical services to arrive, the learner’s mother arrived at the school and, together with a teacher, took her to the nearest clinic. Despite their efforts, the learner was declared deceased upon arrival.

On Tuesday (12/8), education MEC Viola Motsumi visited the grieving family, accompanied by senior officials from the department and representatives of local tribal authorities. “We are profoundly saddened by the untimely passing of this young learner,” she said.

“Our hearts go out to the family, friends, relatives, and the entire Huhudi Secondary School community during this incredibly difficult time. We acknowledge the immense emotional impact of this loss and encourage unity and support among all those affected.”

The department of education has deployed its psycho-social support unit to both the school and the family’s home. The unit will offer trauma counselling and emotional support to learners, educators, support staff, and family members to help them cope with the grief, Molokwane added.

The department has also confirmed that it is awaiting the results of the official post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death. “We will respect the family’s privacy and will not disclose further details without their explicit consent,” Molokwane stated.

The North West department of education said it remains committed to providing a safe and supportive learning environment and will continue to offer support to the school community during this period of mourning.
