The remarkable bond between a man and his dog is paving the way for brighter days ahead in the Virginia community.

What began as a desperate mission to save an injured pet has evolved into a new chapter of healing and opportunity. Sello Mabote walked 15km to save his furry friend.

His devotion has opened new doors, including employment at the Virginia SPCA, where he now helps other animals in need. Option was hit by a car a few weeks ago, leaving her with a severe leg fracture.

With no one willing to help and unable to secure transport, Mabote lifted her in his arms and began the long walk from Kutlwanong to seek veterinary care.

Option received treatment for her fractured leg, and during her recovery, she developed an infection. After weeks of care, the vets decided to amputate the limb.

“Despite every effort, prayer, and intervention, the infection would not free her from pain and give her a true chance at life,” said Virginia SPCA chairperson Thea Smith. “Her leg had to sadly be amputated, but every dark cloud has a silver lining.

“Option is bravely navigating a new three-legged world with Sello right by her side, not just visiting her every day, but he has been employed by the SPCA on a fixed-term contract, and this gives Option the best chance at recovery.”

The Virginia SPCA was moved by Mabote’s devotion and love, and offered him a three-month fixed-term contract as a kennel helper after recognising his prior expertise working in K9 kennels and noticing his evident concern for animals.

According to reports, Mabote said that when he walked with Option, he only thought about saving her, “This job changed my life in a way I never expected.”

The SPCA is confident that Option will enjoy a full, good quality of life, “supported by the man who carried her to safety and the shelter that embraced them both.”

What to do when your pet is hit by a car:

  • Move your pet to safety: If possible, use a blanket or towel to gently lift your pet and move them to a safer location off the road.
  • Monitor for breathing and consciousness: Determine if your pet is conscious and breathing normally.
  • Look for visible injuries: Check for bleeding, broken bones, or any obvious injuries.
  • Contact a veterinary clinic: Contact your veterinarian or the nearest emergency veterinary clinic.
