Operations at the Petrusburg labour centre have once again been halted, this time following a serious attack on a departmental official.

The centre will resume operations on Wednesday (10/12) after it was closed on Monday. The incident allegedly left staff traumatised and worried about their safety.

After Monday’s incident, the department of labour and employment informed clients of the temporary closure. They were urged to utilise the department’s online service during the period.

Two months ago, the department decided to suspend operations at the centre due to safety concerns for both clients and employees, following community unrest sparked by allegations of nepotism.

“This regrettable event has left staff members deeply traumatised and concerned for their safety,” said labour spokesperson Petunia Lessing, adding the department cannot divulge any further information. “Since this matter is now under investigation and has become a legal matter, we appeal for the public’s understanding and patience during this period, as we prioritise the safety and well-being of our employees.”

The department previously launched an investigation into allegations of nepotism and unfair hiring practices related to recent appointments. In September, angry residents shut down the centre, vowing it would remain closed until senior officials addressed them directly.

In response, the acting DG revoked all human resources delegations from the Free State with immediate effect, pending the finalisation of internal processes. The ability of provincial officials to make HR-related decisions was put on hold.

Community members alleged the director of unemployment insurance in the Free State appointed relatives and associates to all vacant client service officer posts. Frustration among residents grew after attempts to address the matter through official channels were met with delays, prompting them to close the centre.

“The department apologises for any inconvenience caused,” said Lessing. “Clients are encouraged to make use of the department’s online services.”
