The case of a Bloemfontein police officer who allegedly kidnapped a Martie du Plessis Special School learner is due back in the local magistrate’s court in March.

Sgt Nzima Adoons appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (17/2) on charges of kidnapping and extortion. The case stems from the alleged kidnapping of Kamogelo Baukudi, 19, a learner with special educational needs.

The case was postponed to Tuesday, 24 March, for a regional court date and consultations. At his previous court appearance in December, it was postponed again to give the state a chance to decide whether it will be heard in the regional court or the high court.

Adoons was released on bail of R2,000 in July. As part of his bail conditions, he may not interfere with the investigation or intimidate state witnesses. He must also report to his nearest police station every Friday and Sunday.

‘Adoons was connected to the case through the tracking device’

“It means that the matter will be transferred to the regional court on the date to be confirmed after consultations between the defence teams,” said Free State NPA spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane.

Adoons was connected to the case through the tracking device of the vehicle he was driving on the day Kamogelo was abducted. This was disclosed by investigating officer Lt. Col. Kelaotswe Lebodi during his testimony in October.

Lebodi also testified the vehicle tracker reportedly placed him at the precise location where Kamogelo was last seen.

Kamogelo was allegedly abducted after school in June by men posing as police officers. After the learner was collected by a driver employed by one of his parents in a Suzuki, the suspected kidnappers followed them and stopped the vehicle near Vereeniging Drive.

Daniel Malebatso, the driver, claims he heard a siren behind them, and the occupants of a white Toyota Hilux double-cab bakkie equipped with blue “police lights” pulled them over.

Kamogelo and Malebatso were then separated, and Malebatso was instructed to continue driving to the Park Road police station while they would follow with Kamogelo. However, the Toyota Hilux disappeared from view when a truck moved between the Suzuki and the Hilux.
