Teaching and learning have resumed at Are-Fadimeheng Secondary School in Jouberton, Klerksdorp, following a tense standoff between learners, community members and staff.

Classes continued on Tuesday (17/3) after disruptions the day before when learners and community members halted academic activities while demanding the urgent removal of the school principal. Police were reportedly called to the school, where the situation escalated. The principal was safely escorted off the premises.

The school has experienced prolonged conflict between staff and learners, said North West education spokesperson Vuyo Mantshule.

The department intervened last year, deploying a team led by superintendent-general Lengane Bogatsu to investigate challenges it faced. Several allegations have been raised against the principal, he added.

North West education MEC Viola Motsumi condemned the interruption to schooling, while stating that due process is underway. The investigating team is set to table its report once all affected parties have been consulted, she emphasised.

“I wish to condemn the disruption of teaching and learning that occurred at this school,” she said. “I always encourage peaceful engagement whenever conflicts arise; violence is never the solution.

“At one point, I personally visited the school to monitor progress and provide support. I have also tasked a team to conduct an investigation, and a report will be tabled as soon as all involved parties have been consulted.”

As part of interim measures, the department of education has directed the principal to report to the local area office pending the outcome of the investigation.

The province had recently faced several challenges, including bullying, gangsterism and learners being violated.

Last month, reports that a grade 1 learner was violated by a grade 4 learner at Waterkloof Hills Primary School bathrooms in Rustenburg emerged. The alleged perpetrator was suspended and the department initiated investigations.

Meanwhile, issues of gangsters gained momentum in Vryburg schools in 2023. John Frylinck School had to be closed for two days as a result of learners who were carrying dangerous weapons to school, intending to cause gang-related crime.

During the release of the latest crime stats, North West community safety and transport MEC Wessels Morweng stated his department will work closely with the department of education to address challenges of gang violence in schools.
