Having people who believe in you makes running easier because you’re not carrying the burden alone, says a Comrades finisher.

Northern Cape long-distance athlete Mojalefa Ditshwele reflects on his experience at this year’s Comrades Marathon held on Sunday, 14 June. “I’ve participated in four Comrades Marathons, but this one was the best of them all.”

Taking part in the iconic race had been a lifelong dream for Ditshwele. “When I was growing up, I used to watch the Comrades Marathon on TV, and I always believed one day I would be part of it.

“As time went on, I began training with other runners, learning from their experience, and we constantly motivated one another to improve.”

‘My best in every race’

From the moment he started competing, he set himself a clear goal. “I told myself I wanted to become the best runner in the province.

“Not many people in my community were interested in taking part in marathons, so I wanted to be different. I was determined to challenge myself, work hard, and always give my best in every race.”

That determination paid off as Ditshwele crossed the finish line in an impressive six hours and 10 minutes, securing a place among the top 100 finishers. “I was so excited that I almost cried at the finish line, he said.

“The biggest reason I was happy was because I achieved the target I had set for myself before the race.”

Like any marathon, the Comrades tests both physical endurance and mental strength. Every runner faces challenges along the way, and only those who remain focused, determined and resilient are able to push through to the finish.

“One challenge I experienced was running with teammates. Things don’t always go according to plan, and sometimes you have to slow down or wait for a teammate who has fallen behind.

“But I wouldn’t really call it a struggle, because we always believed in one another and supported each other. The journey is never easy, and unexpected obstacles can arise at any moment. But perseverance and resilience make all the difference.”

Ditshwele made many sacrifices to pursue his dreams. Long hours of training and frequent travel often meant spending less time with his family. However, these sacrifices became the driving force behind his determination to achieve his goals.

Through discipline, resolve, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to his passion, he has shown success is earned through hard work and sacrifice, inspiring others to chase their dreams regardless of the challenges.
