A Free State wildlife rescue organisation is calling on individuals, families, schools, businesses, and community organisations to turn their 67 minutes of Mandela Day into meaningful action by supporting rescued wildlife.

Zanchieta Wildlife Rescue will host its 67 Minutes for Wildlife campaign on Friday (17/7) at Pretty Gardens Shopping Centre in Bloemfontein. The initiative aims to collect food, blankets, towels, cleaning products, medical supplies, and other essential items needed to care for the sanctuary’s rescued animals while also raising awareness about wildlife conservation and community involvement.

The campaign forms part of Mandela Day, which encourages South Africans to dedicate 67 minutes to serving others in honour of former president Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of public service.

Through the initiative, Zanchieta hopes to inspire lasting acts of kindness while strengthening support for one of the Free State’s wildlife rehabilitation centres.

The non-profit sanctuary, situated about 18km outside Bloemfontein on the Dealesville road, rescues, rehabilitates, and cares for injured, abandoned, and vulnerable wildlife. It also works closely with conservation authorities and educates communities about the importance of protecting South Africa’s wildlife.

“Mandela Day reminds us that even the smallest act of kindness can make a lasting difference,” said Zanchieta Wildlife Rescue animal caretaker and marketing manager Twanet Steyn. “By donating pet food, blankets, towels, or cleaning products, the community can help us provide the care our rescued animals need.

“Our 67 Minutes for Wildlife activation is an opportunity to support rescued wildlife, learn more about conservation, and enjoy fun activities like face painting and puppet shows with the children.

“Every donation, no matter how big or small, helps us feed and care for rescued animals. Together, we can make a meaningful impact and give vulnerable wildlife a second chance.”

In April, the organisation appealed for urgent assistance to meet the growing demands of caring for more than 110 rescued animals. Zanchieta founder Lizette van Schalkwyk said food remains the sanctuary’s greatest challenge, particularly securing enough meat for lions and other carnivores.

The centre also relies heavily on donations of fruit, vegetables, cleaning equipment, building materials, medical supplies, and financial contributions to maintain its daily operations. Volunteers with practical skills, including electricians, welders, carpenters, and general maintenance workers, are also encouraged to lend a helping hand.
