The DA in the Free State has called for urgent intervention to address the deteriorating condition of the flooded R59 bridge near Viljoenskroon.

The party said the situation continues to endanger motorists and disrupt travel in the area. It has written to Free State MEC for community safety, roads and transport Jabu Mbalula demanding immediate action after a truck reportedly drove into the flooded section of the bridge on Tuesday (14/7).

Beyond the immediate safety concerns, the continued flooding of the bridge has also affected residents and businesses that rely on the route.

It said the recurring closures and hazardous conditions are disrupting travel, hampering economic activity and placing an increasing burden on surrounding communities.

“The continued flooding of the bridge is disrupting travel, affecting economic activity, and placing an increasing burden on surrounding communities,” said Free State DA spokesperson for roads and transport Dulandi Leech.

“Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about the prolonged inaction while being forced to navigate unsafe conditions.”

Delivering his department’s budget speech in Phuthaditjhaba in April, MEC Mbalula said the allocation forms part of a broader R3.58bn departmental budget aimed at improving service delivery across roads, transport, and community safety.

The department has advised the public to:

  • avoid crossing flooded areas, particularly rivers and low-water bridges;
  •  motorists and pedestrians should not attempt to drive or walk through fast-moving water; and
  • road users are encouraged to use alternative routes where possible and wait for water levels to subside before continuing their journeys.

The DA maintained while motorists should take note of these safety warnings, lasting infrastructure improvements are essential to prevent further incidents and ensure the R59 remains safe and accessible for all road users.

In addition, the DA has requested an update on the status of the bridge rehabilitation project. The department had previously indicated the existing construction contract would be terminated and a new contractor would be appointed to complete the outstanding work.

“The DA will continue monitoring the matter closely and hold the department accountable until meaningful action is taken to improve road safety and provide a permanent solution to the recurring flooding,” said Leech.
