France and England have all to play for in bronze medal match─── ILSE SMALBERGER 12:30 Sat, 18 Jul 2026
The bronze medal match between France and England promises to be a humdinger, with both teams eager to show they should have played in the final.
Les Bleus will want to give their coach Didier Deschamps a proper send-off after his loyal service of almost 14 years. His term as French coach will end after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, defender Ibrahima Konate began by paying tribute to his coach’s achievements.
“First of all, I would like to thank him, his staff and everyone who has supported him throughout his long journey with the French national team, because it’s been a long road.
“He has brought so much joy to the French people. It’s true, there have also been some disappointments along the way, but we mustn’t forget all the happiness he’s given us,” said the centre-back.
Win
Deschamp also stressed the importance of winning for his team.
“As a head coach, together with my staff, we will do everything to win,” he said. “I hope that we’ll succeed, but the most important thing is to give it our all.”
A victory at Miami Stadium would see France finish in the top three at a World Cup for the seventh time.

England, who have had their sights set on football’s ultimate prize since they last won it in 1966, must also pick themselves up after a heartbreaking semi-final defeat to Argentina. England were minutes away from reaching the final when the Argentinians turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win.
England head coach Thomas Tuchel said the defeat to Argentina was morale-sapping, but both teams need to get their heads in the game. “None of these players, none of the French players want to play this match,” he said.

“They want to play in the final. We gave everything to be in the final. Everyone plays to win the World Cup, but it is what it is.”
Saturday evening’s match at the Miami Stadium kicks off at 23:00.
