With dozens of animals currently depending on the shelter for food, medical care and protection, the Bloemfontein SPCA is looking to the community for support to sustain its vital work.

The organisation said its immediate financial needs are growing as it continues to rescue, treat and care for animals while also working towards responsible rehoming and preventing animal cruelty. The shelter houses approximately 55 dogs, 16 puppies and 13 cats.

The SPCA plays a vital role in Bloemfontein and the greater Mangaung by rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals in need, helping them get a second chance at life.

The organisation urges residents who can contribute, whether through a once-off donation or ongoing support, to help ensure that animals in need continue to receive care.

“Our biggest priority is to make sure the animals currently in our care have everything they need, from food and medication to veterinary treatment and a safe place to stay,” said Bloemfontein SPCA fundraiser Sarita Louw.

“Food donations are incredibly helpful because they reduce some of our immediate purchasing costs, but we urgently need financial support to cover the many other expenses involved in keeping the SPCA operating.

“We also encourage people and businesses who can to consider supporting the SPCA on a long-term basis.”

More than 2,300 animals received treatment during the past reporting year, with a total of 2,363 animals treated between March last year and February. This included 1,519 dogs and 844 cats.

During the reporting period, 676 animals were either reunited with their owners or placed into new homes. Of these, 298 were responsibly rehomed, while 378 stray animals were reunited with their owners.

SPCA chairperson Zaandré Campher said these figures represent more than statistics. “Every animal reunited with its owner and every animal placed into a responsible home is worth celebrating.”The organisation also conducted 69 animal cruelty investigations, issued 112 warnings, obtained six warrants and removed 169 animals during the reporting period.

The SPCA receives approximately 4,000 telephone calls each month, in addition to emails, WhatsApp messages and other enquiries. The organisation is working on a ticketing system to improve communication, provide reference numbers and strengthen the tracking and follow-up of complaints.

“Members of the public can contribute R50, R100, R200 or more. Financial donations may qualify for a tax deduction, with certificates available on request,” she said.
