Proteas Women will focus on white-ball cricket─── MORGAN PIEK 07:29 Thu, 23 May 2024

“We also need to keep an eye on the IWC rankings for the ODI World Cup next year. So although all three formats are really important to us, I think our main focus for now would be on white-ball cricket.”
The Proteas Women’s cricket team is in camp preparing for their seven-match tour to India next month.
The Proteas will face India in three One-Day Internationals, a one-off Test, and three T20 Internationals that will be played in Bengaluru and Chennai.
The main aim for the Proteas will be the T20 Internationals with the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in mind, while the ODI’s will be equally important.
‘It’s important to build momentum for the T20 World Cup’
The new interim head coach, Dillon du Preez, said it’s important to build momentum for the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh later in the year.
“Having a multi-format series against India ahead of the T20 World Cup makes our preparation a bit difficult,” said Du Preez.
“We also need to keep an eye on the IWC rankings for the ODI World Cup next year. So although all three formats are really important to us, I think our main focus for now would be on white-ball cricket.”
Meanwhile, the Free State Women's cricketer, Miané Smit, could have her first crack at senior international cricket next month.
‘She has already represented South Africa’
The 19-year-old from Bloemfontein is one of two uncapped players named in the Proteas Women's training squad for their upcoming tour.
Smit is the latest player to come out of the Free State and others include Anneke Bosch and Annerie Dercksen who have already presented the Proteas.
The youngster who was still in matric last year has already represented South Africa at junior level.
The first ODI will be played on 16 June in Bengaluru.
