Olympians headline star-studded MTB field in Bloemfontein─── MORGAN PIEK 07:56 Thu, 16 Jul 2026
South Africa’s leading mountain bikers will descend on Bloemfontein this weekend when the country’s premier cross-country riders compete for national honours at the South African National XCC and XCO Championships at Happy Valley.
More than 250 riders are expected to line up on one of the country’s most demanding cross-country courses, with Olympians, national champions and rising stars all chasing the coveted national jersey.
Among the biggest attractions will be Olympic bronze medallist and reigning UCI XCO World Champion Alan Hatherly, who returns to a venue where he has enjoyed success before. The elite men’s field also boasts experienced campaigners Johan van Zyl, Luke Moir and Phillip Buys, ensuring an exciting battle for the national title.

The women’s competition promises to be equally competitive, with Olympian Candice Lill returning to Happy Valley after winning the national title there in 2022. She will face stiff opposition from Danielle du Toit and Tyler Jacobs, while several talented under-23 riders will also be looking to challenge the country’s established stars.
For cycling enthusiasts, it is a rare opportunity to watch South Africa’s finest mountain bikers compete in the Free State.
Charl Roos of Free State Cycling told OFM Sport that bringing the championships back to Bloemfontein after four years is a significant occasion.
“We’re incredibly excited to welcome the National XCC and XCO Championships back to Happy Valley,” said Roos.
“The event was a tremendous success when we hosted it in 2022, and we’re looking forward to delivering an even better championship this time around.”
Roos said the quality of the field reflects the prestige of the event.

“We’ve attracted more than 250 riders, including Olympians and world-class competitors. Alan Hatherly, Candice Lill, Johan van Zyl, Luke Moir and Phillip Buys are among the biggest names, while our younger riders will have the chance to test themselves against the very best.”
Happy Valley’s reputation as one of South Africa’s toughest cross-country venues is expected to produce thrilling racing.
“The course is extremely technical, with steep climbs, rocky sections and demanding descents. It really rewards riders with excellent technical ability and fitness, so spectators can expect spectacular racing throughout the weekend.”

Roos added that hosting an event of this calibre is a major boost for Bloemfontein.
“We don’t often get the opportunity to showcase athletes of this level in our city. For Bloemfontein, hosting these championships is a massive occasion and one that cycling fans shouldn’t miss.”
Spectators are encouraged to spend the weekend at Happy Valley, where a race village featuring food stalls, vendors and live entertainment will complement the racing. Roads surrounding the venue will be closed during competition, while parking will cost R30 and includes access to the race village.
The National Championships will take place on Saturday and Sunday.
