Mandela Day: Paws Haven calls on community to give rescued animals hope─── ZENANDE MPAME 14:17 Wed, 15 Jul 2026
“This Mandela Day, you can join us to give some love, care and hope to the rescued animals,” says Paws Haven director Cecilia Marais.
As South Africans prepare to dedicate 67 minutes to community service this Mandela Day, the Potchefstroom animal shelter is encouraging residents to spend that time bringing hope to rescued dogs and cats waiting for a second chance.
The shelter says every minute volunteered and every donation received can make a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable animals.
On Saturday (18/7), it’s inviting residents, families, friends and colleagues to spend time caring for the dogs and cats in its care by volunteering, donating essential supplies or simply helping to raise awareness about animal welfare.
“Mandela Day is an opportunity for people to make their 67 minutes count by giving rescued animals the love, care and hope they deserve,” said Marais. “Even a small act of kindness can have a lasting impact on their lives.
“We have many dogs that would benefit from getting out of their kennels for a walk, and our cats also need time with people. Spending time with the animals is one of the most meaningful ways the community can support them.
“If you are unable to volunteer your time, donations of pet food, blankets, cleaning supplies, or other essential items are always appreciated. Every contribution helps us provide the best possible care for the animals at the shelter.”
Every act of kindness, no matter how big or small, makes a difference to the animals in our care, she said.
The shelter also welcomes donations of dog and cat food, canned food, cat litter, towels, blankets, toys, leashes, collars, black bags and cleaning products. Those wanting to provide ongoing support can sponsor an animal’s food for a day, a week or a month, make a financial contribution or purchase items from the shelter’s wish list.
The shelter is also encouraging community members to become volunteers or foster parents for animals awaiting adoption.
It hopes to collect enough food, supplies and support on Mandela Day to continue caring for the animals while raising greater awareness about responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.
Residents who want to help can visit Paws Haven or contact the shelter on 063 181 3524.
