Klaasen retires from international cricket─── MORGAN PIEK 13:20 Mon, 02 Jun 2025

South African cricket has suffered a significant setback on the international stage, with big-hitting wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen announcing his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect.
The 33-year-old confirmed today that he will no longer be available for One-Day Internationals (ODIs) or T20 Internationals for the Proteas.
Klaasen scored 2,141 runs in 60 ODIs and notched up 1,000 runs in 58 T20 Internationals for South Africa.
He admitted that the decision was not an easy one, but spending more time with his family has become his top priority.

“It’s a sad day for me as I announce that I’ve decided to step away from international cricket," said Klaasen.
“It took me a long time to figure out what’s best for me and my family going forward. It was truly a very difficult decision, but one I have complete peace with.
“From day one, it’s been the biggest privilege to represent my country. It was everything I worked for and dreamed of as a young boy.
“I’ve made amazing friendships and memories that I’ll cherish for the rest of my life. Playing for the Proteas gave me the chance to meet incredible people who changed my life – and to those people, I can’t thank you enough.

“My journey to wearing the Proteas shirt was different to most, and there were a few coaches who never stopped believing in me – I’ll always be grateful to them.
“To have worn the Proteas badge on my chest was, and always will be, the greatest honour of my career.
“I’m looking forward to spending more quality time with my family, and this decision will allow me to do just that.

“I’ll always be a proud Proteas supporter and want to thank everyone who supported me and my teammates throughout my career.”
Klaasen, who has also captained the national side, will continue playing in T20 leagues across the globe.
