Brits hits career best as Proteas Women storm to victory over WI─── ILSE SMALBERGER 08:21 Sat, 21 Jun 2025

Opening batter Tazmin Brits hit a career-best 98 not out, off just 63 balls, to lead the Proteas Women to a 50-run win in the opening T20I against West Indies in Cave Hill on Friday.
The West Indies won the toss and chose to bowl first. South Africa's start was wobbly, with both captain Laura Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp losing their wickets within five overs to Jazhara Claxton. The Proteas finished the powerplay on 44 for 2.
Brits and Nadine de Klerk established a solid platform for the third wicket, scoring 71 runs in six overs – 42 of those runs by Brits. Claxton also took De Klerk’s scalp for 21 in the 11th over, but Brits continued through the innings, hitting nine fours and four sixes to carry South Africa to 183/6 ultimately.

West Indies managed 47 in the powerplay, but lost three wickets, including the big one of captain Hayley Matthews to Proteas allrounder Marizanne Kapp. The hosts continued to capitulate, but Jannillea Glasgow provided some resistance, scoring 53 not out from 44 balls.
However, it was too little, too late, and the West Indies could only manage 133/6 in their 20 overs. Brits was the Player of the Match for her excellent innings. South Africa will, however, not be happy with the 18 extras conceded in the match.
The second T20 will be played on Sunday at the same venue and will start at 16:00, local time.
