Klerksdorp-born batter Lesego Senokwane has admitted to feeling a mix of excitement and nerves ahead of his Proteas debut on Sunday in the second Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.

Senokwane, who parted ways with the Knights at the end of the 2024/25 season following the team’s relegation to Division 2, is one of two debutants in the South African XI. The other is Dolphins captain and spinner, Prenelan Subrayen.

The 28-year-old has been on the national selectors’ radar for some time and made a strong case for selection during the past domestic season, scoring a superb 205 for the Knights.

Senokwane was handed his Test cap by Senuran Muthusamy, a former teammate and captain at the North West Dragons before Senokwane’s move to Bloemfontein.

The usually reserved right-hander admitted he was caught slightly off guard when told he would be making his debut. While thrilled at the opportunity, he said the nerves are definitely present.

“My initial reaction was more excitement – and obviously a little bit of anxiety, as you’d expect,” said Senokwane.

“I didn’t know it was going to happen yesterday. I thought maybe today would be the day. So the whole meeting and capping ceremony came as a bit of a shock, but it was a good surprise.

“Getting my cap from Senuran made it even more special. We’ve played together for a couple of years, and it meant a lot to receive it from someone who’s seen my journey.”

Senokwane said the first person he shared the news with was his mother, a pillar of support throughout his cricketing journey.

“Obviously, my mother was the first person I messaged. I had to let her know the good news and explain everything to her,” he said. “She’s been with me through everything. She raised me and has seen all the ups and downs.

“So it was a special moment to tell her that her investment in me paid off. She was overjoyed to hear that her son would finally represent South Africa.”

The second Test between Zimbabwe and the Proteas at Queens Sports Club is set to get underway at 10:00 on Sunday morning.
