Proteas Women’s coach Mandla Mashimbyi is expecting big things from exciting young all-rounder Kayla Reyneke during the upcoming ICC Women's T20 World Cup in England and Wales.

The 20-year-old has been named in the South African squad for what will be her first senior World Cup appearance.

Since making her senior Proteas debut earlier this year against Pakistan, Reyneke has taken the cricket world by storm with her fearless power-hitting and ability to finish matches under pressure.

While the youngster has scored 159 runs in seven innings, she boasts an impressive average of 53 and has already struck 12 fours and 12 sixes.

She has also claimed five wickets, with best figures of 2/10. On paper, those numbers may not immediately jump out, but Reyneke generally bats lower down the order, where her role has been to close out matches and guide South Africa home in pressure situations - something she has done with remarkable composure and confidence.

Mashimbyi believes Reyneke could become one of the breakout stars of the World Cup.

“You know, she’s definitely shown her talent with the opportunities that have been given to her,” said Mashimbyi.

“She’s definitely somebody who is going to rock the world and, if the opportunity presents itself during the World Cup, I’m pretty confident that she will do well for us.”

While there is growing excitement around Reyneke’s raw talent and fearless approach, there has also been concern over the recent form of experienced opener Tazmin Brits, who has been one of the Proteas Women’s standout performers in recent years.

Brits has endured a lean run by her lofty standards this season, with some even suggesting that Anneke Bosch should replace her for the World Cup.

Mashimbyi, however, has thrown his full support behind the Klerksdorp-born batter and believes she will rediscover her best form in time for the global showpiece.

“There’s a process in place with regards to Tazmin and I’m not too taken aback based on the performances she’s been giving,” said Mashimbyi.

“We’re busy with the process with her and we’re pretty confident that by the time we get to England, she’ll be where she needs to be.

“She’s been a stalwart since I’ve taken over and has probably been one of my best players, especially in the 50-over game. In terms of the power and talent, you cannot take that away from her.

“I’m pretty sure that by the time we get to the World Cup, those processes will come together and she’ll fire on all cylinders.”

South Africa will open their World Cup campaign against Australia at the iconic Old Trafford in Manchester on 13 June.
