The Proteas secured their 10th consecutive Test victory on Tuesday, thrashing Zimbabwe by an innings and 236 runs in Bulawayo on day three of the second Test.

The reigning Test world champions wrapped up a 2-0 series whitewash with a commanding win at Queens Sports Club.

South Africa declared their first innings on 626/5 before bowling Zimbabwe out for 170 and 220 in their two innings, respectively. Coach Shukri Conrad said there was plenty to be pleased about across both Tests, most notably, the team’s ability to maintain the high standards they’ve set for themselves.

“I think the important and most impressive thing for me was how we managed to maintain the high standards we set, both in the first and second Tests,” said Conrad.

“Batting first, we found ourselves in a bit of trouble against the new ball in both matches, but the way the youngsters, Lhuan-Dré Pretorius and Dewald Brevis, managed the situation in the first Test was exceptional. Then again, in the second, when we were under pressure early on, Wiaan Mulder stood up with a monumental knock.

“On the bowling front, our discipline throughout was outstanding. We kept the Zimbabwean batters under constant pressure, and that’s something we pride ourselves on.

“The fielding and catching, which we place huge value on, were also top-class. Overall, I was really pleased with how we applied ourselves in all departments.”

Speaking on his captain Wiaan Mulder’s record-breaking performance with the bat, and his surprise declaration, Conrad said it speaks volumes about the character of a player he holds in high regard.

“There’s been so much said, but you know how it is, sometimes the truth doesn’t get in the way of a good story,” Conrad said.

“I asked him yesterday what he was thinking, and he told me, ‘I think we need to bowl.’ I asked him about the record, and he said, ‘I’m fine with that. Let’s leave that for the greats.’

“That really shows the kind of cricketer he wants to be and how he wants to be remembered. I respect that, and I fully buy into it.

“We always talk about being the best version of yourself, and that’s certainly the best version of Wiaan. I’m thrilled he was able to deliver with the bat.

“As for the declaration,  it’s one of those situations where you’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t. But this is all about Wiaan Mulder and what a performance he’s delivered for South Africa.

“Not long ago, people weren’t even sure if he should be in the side or batting at number three, and now the conversation has completely changed. I’m really happy for Wiaan, and I’m sure he’s just as happy too.”

South Africa and Zimbabwe will now turn their focus to the shortest format when they meet again on Monday in the first T20 International of the Tri-Series in Harare.
