The Flexbrands Knights suffered their first defeat of the Division 2 One-Day Cup on Thursday, going down by seven wickets to the Garden Route Badgers in Oudtshoorn.

It was only the Knights’ second loss of the entire season, and there is little reason for alarm as they continue their pursuit of an unprecedented domestic season treble. Batting first in the Little Karoo, the Knights were restricted to 250/8 in their allotted 50 overs.

Opening batter Jacques Snyman top-scored with 46 off 59 balls, sharing a solid first-wicket partnership of 82 with Isaac Dikgale. Dikgale was dismissed for 30 in the 16th over, and just three balls later, Snyman was trapped lbw by Sintu Majeza.

Ruben Maree, who was the batting hero in the Knights’ thrilling one-wicket win against the CSA Emerging Team, contributed 32 off 40 balls, while Patrick Botha added 26.

Wicketkeeper Ruan Haasbroek chipped in with a handy 41 off 51, and young all-rounder Seth Fledermaus provided late impetus with a lively cameo of 28 from 25 deliveries.

Majeza was the pick of the SWD bowlers with figures of 3/53 in eight overs, while Jade Richter claimed 2/63 from his nine.

In reply, the Badgers got off to a dream start as openers Yaseen Vallie and Ruan Terblanche dominated proceedings with a commanding first-wicket stand of 221.

Vallie fell just seven runs short of what would have been his third List A century when he was bowled by Malusi Siboto for 93. Terblanche, however, carried on to record his second List A century – and second of the season – matching his career best.

Earlier in the competition, he struck an unbeaten 133 against the Northern Cape Heat, and he repeated the feat here with another 133 before being caught by captain Dane Piedt off Siboto’s bowling.

The opening partnership had already laid the perfect platform for the Badgers, who comfortably chased down the target in 39.2 overs. Siboto was once again the pick of the Knights' bowlers with figures of 3/45 in his 10 overs.

Despite the defeat, the Knights remain top of the standings, leading the second-placed Limpopo Impalas by three points. While the loss was a minor setback, the Free Staters will know that maintaining their consistency will be crucial if they are to secure a home qualifier – and potentially a home final.

Snyman told OFM Sport the result was disappointing, but credit had to go to the Badgers, and the focus now shifts to bouncing back against the Northern Cape.

“It’s obviously not the way we wanted to play today, but that’s part of cricket – these things happen,” said Snyman. “Credit must go to the Garden Route Badgers’ batters; I thought they played really well.

“For us, it’s about bouncing back against the Northern Cape. We’ve had the better of them during the season, so it’s just a matter of sharpening up our skills and being better in the next game.

“We won’t break our hearts over this one – we just need to come back stronger.” Sunday’s clash between the Knights and the Heat at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein is scheduled to get underway at 10:00.
