The Proteas returned to winning ways on Sunday with a seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the T20 International Tri-Series being played in Harare.

The win has set South Africa up to contest the final this coming weekend, which will most likely be against New Zealand.

South Africa won the toss and elected to field first at Harare Sports Club in their second match of the series against the hosts.

Zimbabwe were restricted to 144/6 in their 20 overs, with Brian Bennett top-scoring with 61 off 43 balls, and Ryan Burl contributing 36 from 31 deliveries.

Corbin Bosch led the way with the ball for South Africa, returning figures of 2/16 from his four overs. He was well supported by left-arm seamer Nandré Burger, who took 1/20, while Lungi Ngidi chipped in with 1/29.

In reply, North West Dragons batter Rubin Hermann notched up his maiden international fifty, blasting 63 off just 36 balls. Captain Rassie van der Dussen guided the team home with an unbeaten 52, as the Proteas chased down the target with 16 balls to spare.

Dewald Brevis, the 22-year-old rising star, added an unbeaten 13 off 7 balls to see the team over the line.

For Zimbabwe, Tinotenda Maposa was the most successful bowler, finishing with figures of 2/38. Richard Ngarava, meanwhile, was the most economical, conceding just 21 runs in his four overs and picking up a wicket.

Speaking after the match, Hermann, who was named Player of the Match, emphasised the importance of being clinical and ruthless with the bat.

“Zimbabwe did well to recover after losing a few early wickets, but I think the key difference was that we were more ruthless in punishing the bad balls,” Hermann said.

“We also ran our twos really well. That made a big difference, we didn’t just rely on boundaries, we worked hard between the wickets too.

“All in all, I think we just executed better with the bat.”

The Proteas will be back in action on Tuesday when they face New Zealand at Harare Sports Club. The match is scheduled to start at 13:00.
