Knights coach Triegaardt excited to unleash new players─── MORGAN PIEK 16:39 Tue, 30 Sep 2025

The Knights are excited about the signing of allrounder Ruan Haasbroek ahead of their 2025/26 domestic season, which gets underway on Thursday in Bloemfontein.
The Knights will once again compete in Division 2 this season, with their first match coming against the Eastern Storm, who recently thumped the Limpopo Impalas by an innings and 63 runs over the weekend. It’s largely a settled squad for the Knights, with only three new players joining during the off-season: Proteas seamer Sisanda Magala, and all-rounders Ruan Haasbroek and Cole Abrahams, both of whom have arrived from the Northern Cape Heat.
Haasbroek and Abrahams will, in all likelihood, be on debut for the Knights against the Storm, while Magala will sit this one out.
The 28-year-old Haasbroek is a direct replacement for Dian Forrester, who has moved to the North West Dragons. While Forrester was undoubtedly a strong player, Haasbroek offers a different style – a true fighter on the field, and very similar to Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who is a player that will also try and outthink or outsmart an opponent.
Knights coach JP Triegaardt told OFM Sport that he is thrilled to have Haasbroek in the squad and believes the player, whom he describes as “special”, will be a big asset in what promises to be a tricky campaign.
“I think he brings a lot, to be honest. He’s special,” said Triegaardt. “Over the years, he’s developed his confidence and learned where he’s best suited, what his strengths are, and how he can win games for the team.
“That’s been the discussion since bringing him here. Even moving forward, it’s about finding the best place for him to perform, help the team over the line, and take his own game to the next level.
“He’s an exciting cricketer, and the thing I like most about him is that he’s fearless. He wants to win games, and he brings that mentality to the team. Losing Dian was tough, but Haasbroek is the perfect replacement.”
Triegaardt also has high hopes for the tall Abrahams, describing him as a confident young cricketer with solid technique who will add value to the squad. “Cole brings a lot of calmness – that’s just his personality,” Triegaardt added.
“It shows in his batting, and it’s a real asset. He has proper technique, which is crucial in four-day cricket. You need players who understand their game and the nuances of cricket, and he definitely fits that profile.
“I also feel he balances the energy in the change room. We have a lot of energetic guys, some of them a bit wild-headed, and Cole brings a calm presence, especially in a batting lineup that can face pressure. He’ll be an important stabilising influence this season, and I hope he has a great campaign.”
Play at the Mangaung Oval is scheduled to start at 10:00 on Thursday.
