Just four months ago, Kayla Reyneke was celebrating a dream debut for the Proteas Women; now she’s in England preparing for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup tie on Wednesday against Pakistan in Birmingham.

On Saturday, she made her senior T20 World Cup debut in Manchester, but was caught and bowled for a duck, and didn’t bowl during the 65-run defeat to Australia at Old Trafford.

The 20-year-old Reyneke has quickly established herself as one of the country’s most exciting young prospects. Since making her international debut, she has delivered a series of impressive performances that have highlighted both her skill and composure under pressure.

Her memorable T20 International debut against Pakistan earned her the Player of the Match award, while her contribution to South Africa’s thrilling One-Day International victory over New Zealand further showcased her ability to perform when it matters most.

Now part of the Proteas squad at the biggest tournament in women’s cricket, Reyneke is embracing every moment of the experience.

The former South Africa Under-19 captain reflected on how quickly her cricket journey has evolved.

“I always say how quickly things can change in just a few months. I’m still trying to take it all in. To be here at my first World Cup is incredible. It’s also my first time in the UK, so being able to live out my dream on the world stage is really special.”

For the young all-rounder, representing South Africa at a World Cup is about far more than personal achievement. One of the highlights is sharing the field with players she has admired for years.

“Wearing the Proteas badge and taking the field alongside some of my role models is something I’m really looking forward to,” she explained. “Playing at some of the iconic venues in the UK makes it even more special.”

Among those venues, Lord’s remains at the top of her wish list.

“Lord’s is such an iconic ground. Hopefully, I get the opportunity to play there, but honestly, just being here is already an amazing experience.”

As one of South Africa’s brightest young stars, Reyneke is aware of the expectations that come with representing her country. However, she believes support, preparation, and self-belief are key to handling the pressure.

“In any sport, there will always be expectations, especially when you’re young and stepping onto a big stage. The support around you is important. It’s about trusting the work you’ve put in and believing that you belong here.”

Reyneke has also embraced the role assigned to her by head coach Mandla Mashimbyi. She is expected to provide finishing power with the bat while remaining adaptable with the ball.

Looking further ahead, captaining the Proteas remains an ambition, although her immediate focus is on learning from experienced leaders such as Laura Wolvaardt, Suné Luus, and Dané van Niekerk.

For Reyneke, the team’s mantra of “undeniable belief” is central to South Africa’s World Cup ambitions.

“It’s about trusting our preparation and believing in one another,” she said. “We have a team that supports each other, coaches who believe in us, and a country behind us. Now it’s about believing in ourselves and taking that final step towards success.”

Wednesday’s game between South Africa and Pakistan at Edgbaston is scheduled to get underway at 19:30.
