Bedingham backs Proteas to respond in 2nd Test against Australia─── MORGAN PIEK 07:54 Sat, 17 Oct 2026
The Proteas are ready and eager to bounce back in the second Test against Australia which is set to get underway on Sunday in Gqeberha.
South Africa lost the opening Tests by 214 runs at Kingsmead in Durban, and this game after having Australia on the backfoot somewhat during their first innings.
The Proteas have already indicated that they will tweak the batting order with Matthew Breetzke set to play in his third Test, while Marques Ackerman is expected to make his long-awaited debut.

It seams that Kyle Verreynne will be dropped with Ryan Rickelton taking over as wicketkeeper, while Tristan Stubbs was replaced in the squad by Breetzke.
One of the very few shining lights with the bat in the first Test for South Africa with the Western Province top-order batter, David Bedingham, who scored 49 and 46.
Bedingham said the approach of the second Test should not be drastic, but rather a matter of doing the basics well for longer.
“In first-class cricket, you might face one decent bowler, then another, and perhaps cash in against the third or fourth,” said the in-form batter.
“But against Australia, you get through six balls of Pat Cummins, and then it’s Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon. It’s tough, but we’ve faced them before, so hopefully we can do it for longer periods.
“Personally, I’d go about it the same way. If there are three slips and a gully, there’s more chance to score.
“It’s obviously a different challenge, but one I’m up for. I don’t change much or think about it too much.”

Bedingham added that they are in a position when they need a win to draw level in the series, and they best thing that they can do is to bat themselves.
“There’s been lots of chatter around it, but the one thing we can do is try to bounce back” said Bedingham.
“I think that’s the only way we can really show it. Hopefully, come the next Test, we’re ready and up for it.”
He also added that South Africa’s premier fast bowler Kagiso Rabada can be back from his hamstring injury, and should he return to it will be a massive boost.
“He’s massive for us - I’m not a physio or a doctor, so I’m not sure, but the way it looks, he’s quick again and sharp.
“Hopefully, come the next Test, he’s ready to cause havoc.”
The 2nd Test at St George’s Park will begin on Sunday, and the first ball is set to be bowled at 10:00.
