“Text Me When You Arrive”, a powerful and daring satirical theatre production confronting gender-based violence, opens Thursday (10/7) at the Performing Arts Centre of the Free State (Pacofs), with daily performances at 18:30 until Saturday (12/7).

Reflecting the tragic reality for many South African women who feel that “true safety comes only after death”, “Text Me When You Arrive” is characterised by its impactful and satirical approach, delving into the everyday experiences of South African women through the innovative lens of a fictional YouTube channel.

“The satirical aspect is not necessarily to shift the seriousness of the themes that are there, but also to make it, in a way, accommodating to the audience,” said the producer of the performance, Haleigh Evans.

She emphasises her desire for women to feel genuinely heard through the performance. The production serves as a potent call to action against gender-based violence, aiming to spark tangible change.

“The production intends to go on tour internationally because GBV is a worldwide problem, and ‘Text Me When You Arrive’ was a hashtag that was used globally. I would like to see rich conversations regarding behaviour change and understanding how we can make progress,” said Evans, underscoring the wider impact they hope to accomplish, especially through opportunities to perform at schools.

“Despite the challenges it confronts, ‘Text Me When You Arrive’ is rooted in hope,” said Maseeta Makgabane, spokesperson for Pacofs. “The artists dare to pursue what may feel like an impossible mission: to speak out, be seen, and spark change – even among those responsible for perpetuating the very issues being examined.”
