Renowned South African DJ and producer Ashley Raphala, popularly known as DJ Shimza, continues to make waves on the international music scene.

Having graced major festivals such as Tomorrowland and holding an Ibiza residency, Shimza recently won song of the year at the Miami Electronic Dance Awards (Edmas). Sharing the exciting news on social media, Shimza expressed his gratitude for the recognition this past weekend.

The Gauteng department of sport, arts, culture and recreation also shared congratulatory messages.

Shimza’s hit single Fire Fire, a collaboration with AR/CO and Kasango, was awarded Afrohouse song of the year, further cementing his status as a leading figure in global electronic music.

The prestigious win came during Miami Music Week 2026, a pivotal moment in the international dance music calendar, held from Monday (23/3) to Sunday  (29/3) and anchored by the Ultra Music Festival at Bayfront Park (Friday to Sunday).

Notably, Shimza joins a select group of elite South African artists recognised at the Edmas. His win in the specialised Afrohouse category underscores the growing dominance of the South African sound on the world stage, said departmental spokesperson Tumelo Taunyane.

“We are proud of our shared commitment to youth development and the creative economy.

‘His noble philanthropic efforts have focused on providing platforms for emerging artists’

“His noble philanthropic efforts, including the annual One Man Show held in the township of Thembisa, have focused on providing platforms for emerging artists within the province, an initiative appreciated by the department,” Taunyane added.

Gauteng MEC for education, sport, arts, culture and recreation Matome Chiloane also congratulated the Thembisa-born star.

“On behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government, I wish to congratulate Shimza on this monumental achievement. Shimza is a shining example of how one’s background should never dictate where they go in life.

“Emerging from the vibrant streets of Thembisa, he has consistently worked hard to reach some of the world's most prestigious stages.

“His success is a testament to the talent that resides within our townships and throughout our communities. He has not only exported the Gauteng beat to Miami, Ibiza, and London, but he has also remained rooted, consistently giving back to the community that raised him.

“He is a true ambassador for the Growing Gauteng Together vision, proving that with discipline and creativity, our youth can conquer the world."
