The 21-year-old South African star, Aldrich Potgieter, is determined to go one better this week when the 2025 Nedbank Golf Challenge tees off at Sun City on Thursday morning.

Last year, Potgieter finished joint runner-up at Africa’s Major, agonisingly falling just one stroke short of American Johannes Veerman. A South African hasn’t lifted the iconic Million Dollar trophy at the Gary Player Country Club since Brandon Grace in 2017 - something Potgieter is eager to change.

With Africa’s Major also serving as a season-opener for the DP World Tour, Potgieter says his goals are clear and ambitious.

“One of the big goals would be to win this week,” said Potgieter, who plies his trade on the PGA Tour.

“It would be great to start the next PGA Tour season on a positive note. We’re getting into some of the majors next year, so I’m definitely looking to put some good results together for that.

“A top-30 finish would also be big to get into the Atlanta field at the end of the year. There’s a lot to look forward to, but those are the main goals.”

Potgieter stressed the importance of building early momentum, saying a strong week in the Pilanesberg can shape the rest of his season.

“Obviously winning again would be great - it opens up a lot of doors after a few wins, so I just want to keep climbing that ladder and try to improve every day.”

The young South African also spoke passionately about the special place Africa’s Major holds for him. Playing in front of home crowds - friends, family, and fans - adds fuel to his competitive fire.

“It’s such a great event. I’ve got so many family and friends coming out this week, so it’s really special to be at home and play in front of them,” Potgieter said.

“With the history here with Mr Gary Player and the names that have walked up that ninth, it’s pretty special.”

“He believes the winning score can be dictated by the weather.

“If it firms up, I think something around eight-under will be a good number, but that can change quickly if the rain comes.”

Potgieter tees off at 10:39 on Thursday, alongside China’s Haotong Li and Canada’s Nick Taylor, as he looks to begin his season - and South Africa’s hopes - with a bang.
