The 116th SA Open set for Stellenbosch as well─── MORGAN PIEK 07:35 Tue, 18 Aug 2026
The 116th South African Open will return to the Cape Winelands next year, with Stellenbosch Golf Club set to host the country’s national Open for a second-year running.
The tournament, which is the second-oldest Open championship in golf, is building on the success of its record-breaking 2026 edition, which contributed almost R300m to the local economy.
The event remains a major showcase of the strategic partnership between the Sunshine Tour, DP World Tour and PGA Tour with the prize fund increasing to over R32m for the 2027 championship.
The South African Open also strengthened its position among the world’s leading national Opens in 2026 when it offered exemptions into both The Open and The Masters for the first time in its history.

Casey Jarvis made the most of the opportunity after winning the championship. The rising South African star went on to finish a career-best tied sixth at The Open, while he is also pushing for a PGA Tour card for the 2027 season.
Sunshine Tour Commissioner Thomas Abt said the tournament’s growing international profile was matched by its impact off the course.
“The success of the South African Open is clear to see both inside and outside the ropes as our national Open continues to elevate its status on the global stage through the opportunities it creates for our professionals, the economic impact it has on the local community, and the value it delivers for sponsors,” said Abt.

He highlighted Jarvis as an example of the pathway the championship can provide to South African golfers through the strategic alliance with the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR, as well as the support of The R&A, The Masters and GolfRSA.
“Casey Jarvis was a perfect example of the pathway the championship offers through the strategic alliance we have with the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR, and the support from The R&A, The Masters and GolfRSA,” Abt said.
“His victory saw him qualify for and make his debut in both The Open and The Masters, launching a new phase of his career, and delivering another international star for South African golf.”

The 2026 tournament also made a significant contribution to the local economy, creating around 400 jobs and generating an estimated R1.1b in net sponsorship value. The championship generated almost R300m in economic impact.
The 2027 championship will also introduce new qualifying venues in Pretoria, with Irene Country Club, Wingate Country Club and Waterkloof Golf Club joining the qualifying process.
For the first time, a Last Chance Qualifier will also be held in the Western Cape ahead of the championship, giving aspiring players one final opportunity to earn their place in the field.
The 116th SA Open will be played from 4 to 7 March 2027.
