Marjorie Brooks-Morris dies | News Article
Durban - Former dame of the airwaves, Marjorie Brooks-Morris, tragically committed suicide this morning.

News of the death of Marjorie Brooks-Morris, shocked the volumes of people who knew her personally and those who met with the eclectic personality on Durban’s social scene.

She was a familiar face many might remember from the good old days of Good Morning South Africa and Springbok Radio, married to one of the top cranial surgeons in the country, Dr Warwick Morris.

Marjorie was born in the Free State and grew up in Bloemfontein. When she set foot in Durban, she was sold. At age seven she was diagnosed with a rare form of TB and there was little hope for her survival. Against all odds, she defied doctors’ predictions and made a full recovery. She was shot in a hi-jacking a few years ago and this had a huge effect on her life, but she persevered. Determination was her middle name.

In life she was passionate - totally mad about many things. She spent some of the most exciting years of her life lecturing fashion design and pattern construction at the original Natal Technikon where she shared her knowledge to those who were keen to learn. Her involvement in the fashion industry and her social charm also landed her the role as a judge in the Miss SA pageant for 17 years running. Marjorie’s interest in local arts and theatre was testament to the patriotic heart she always said she had for Africa.

In the last few years Marjorie had her hands full relaunching Durban Country Club among other things.

Affectionately known by a handful as Aunty Marj, Marjorie had a deep need to help, to nurture, to be a friend. She had no children of her own and so made it her business to open her heart to the younger generation.

She always joked about being a has-been, not a wanna-be. She indulged in moulding minds and making anyone who needed to glam things up look fabulous. Marjorie permanently reminded those she ran into about the importance of being yourself and treasuring who you are.

During an interview with Get It Magazine a few years ago, Marjorie smiled and said, “When I look back on my life, I think that if I managed to do everything I wanted, despite the circumstances, then I could help others realise they can do the same. There are certain people in life who are instrumental to us and our survival, never forget that. I’ve started saying I love you more to the people in my life, words we often forget to share. I always count my blessings and am grateful, because that’s what we should be. I’ve had my romance with the high life, now it’s my turn to make a difference in someone else’s life."
