Heidedal - Large crowds of people flocked to an unused open veld in Ahsbury, Heidedal this morning and began marking sites on which they plan to illegally squat in the hope that government willsoon build them RDP houses.
Many single parents who live on less than R1 500 per month say they have to use more than half of their income to pay landlords for small rooms that are falling apart.
Sylvia Wessenaar says she is a widow with no income and has to take care of a blind child. She says she simply cannot afford to pay high rent.
ANC ward councilor, Vernon Ward, urged community members to follow the correct procedures to occupy the land, but they believe this is the only way.
Some residents have already given this place a name, dubbing it Vlavella.
