Potchefstroom - Kgotso Khumalo, mayor of the Tlokwe municipality in North West, has admitted to being arrested in Cape Town at the weekend for alleged drunken driving.
In a statement released by his spokesperson Jeanette Tshite last night, Khumalo admitted to being arrested at 02:30am on Saturday in Avonwood Avenue in Elsies River for driving on the wrong side of the road.
Khumalo has been charged with reckless and negligent driving, as well as drunken driving.
This comes after he initially denied the incident to a daily paper earlier this week.
Khumalo was in Cape Town for a jazz festival.
A court date has yet to be determined, while the results of blood alcohol tests are still being processed.
JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security in Cape Town, says it could take up to nine months for the results to be known.
