Viljoenskroon - The family of 81-year-old Vierfontein farmer Buks Swanepoel, who suffered a massive skull fracture in a farm attack on Monday, have received good news.
Swanepoel's granddaughter, Alta Matthee, says the bleeding on his brain has stopped, and an operation is no longer necessary.
Matthee, a theatre sister in Pretoria, says the family is thankful that Swanepoel no longer has to undergo the trauma of an operation at his age. He is still in a critical, but stable condition.
Matthee says her grandmother, 82-year old Baby Swanepoel, who also suffered head injuries in the attack, is doing slightly better. The couple is being treated at the Life Anncron Clinic in Klerksdorp.
One of their alleged attackers, 23-year-old Thankiso Beleme of Lesotho, is in custody and will appear in court again next week.
Another suspect is still at large.
