Deneysville crowd attack police | News Article

Deneysville- Free State police are investigating a case of attempted murder as well as assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm.

This follows a complaint of fighting received yesterday by police in Tshepiso, Deneysville.

According to Free State police spokesperson Livhuhani Hani, on their arrival police found three individuals being assaulted by a small group of people. When the police intervened, a crowd of about 300 people attacked them and their vehicle with bottles and stones. The police called for backup from neighbouring Orangeville. Police fired warning shots in an attempt to disperse the crowd.

One of the community members was hit in the arm and stomach by two stray bullets. The injured, Speelman Mahlsela, was taken to Fezi Ngubentombi Hospital in Sasolburg. Hani says police are still investigating the cause of the incident.
