Kimberley - A high level delegation of the Northern Cape provincial government will meet with Eskom to discuss debt owed to the power supplier by municipalities in the province.

Northern Cape Premier, Sylvia Lucas, and Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs MEC Alvin Botes will be part of the delegation.

In a statement, the department of cooperative governance said municipalities in the province owe Eskom more than R303 million.

The Renosterberg municipality, which includes Petrusville and Philipstown, owes the biggest chunk of the outstanding debt – more than R26 million. The Ubuntu municipality, which includes Victoria West and Richmond, owes more than R25 million and its last payment was made in August.

Municipalities countrywide had their equitable share withheld by national treasury last year until they presented a payment plan for their debt to Eskom and Water boards.
