Wave of retrenchments to come in NC─── CATHY DLODLO 15:25 Thu, 28 Jan 2016

Kathu - A wave of retrenchments that's going to see more than 3 200 mineworkers lose their jobs, is going to hit the Northern Cape.
This is according to the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Solidarity. Solidarity announced yesterday that three mines in Kathu, Aveng Moolmans, Tau Mining and Khumani Iron Ore, have announced that they are going to start retrenchment processes.
This was followed by a statement by NUM that Sishen Iron Ore Company – an operating company of Kumba Iron Ore – is also planning retrenchments – bringing the estimated retrenchments in the Kathu area to 3 233 workers.
Northern Cape Chamber of Commerce CEO Sharon Steyn says these announcements are going to have a severe negative impact on the economy of the province.
