Kimberley - A ruling on the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU)’s application in the Trifecta case against former Northern Cape Finance MEC, John Block, and businessman, Christo Scholtz, is expected today.
The AFU is claiming over R750 million in assets from Scholtz, and around R2.7 million from Block, which includes a guesthouse in Upington that Block allegedly upgraded with money he received from Trifecta deals.
Block and Scholtz were found guilty of corruption and money laundering last year relating to the leasing of buildings to the Northern Cape Social Development Department, which rented buildings owned by Trifecta, of which Scholtz was the director. Sentencing proceedings against the pair will continue after the AFU's application is handled in the Kimberley High Court.
DFA reporter, Sandi Kwon Hoo, reports that the AFU, among other things, also applied to seize deceased MP Yolanda Botha’s R2,5 million house.
Botha and Northern Cape Cooperative Governance and Human Settlements MEC, Alvin Botes, were charged alongside Block and Scholtz. Botes was acquitted while Botha died of cancer during the trial.
