Potchefstroom - An investigation into allegations of fraud and corruption in the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, commissioned by the national department of Higher Education and Training, includes the North West University.
The department appointed Nexus Forensic Services to conduct a comprehensive audit over several academic years at ten higher education institutions – six universities and four Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.
Included in the scope of the investigation is to determine the extent of misrepresentation and fraud committed by students who qualified and have received financial aid, including parents and guardians, employees of these institutions and individuals who have manipulated financial aid processes to defraud NSFAS.
The Motheo TVET College in Bloemfontein is not on the list, although complaints by students have lead to protest actions. The department said, however, that the investigation might be extended.
