Inter-Ministerial Committee chair visiting Tlokwe, Ventersdorp─── MOEKETSI MOGOTSI 10:05 Sun, 10 Jul 2016
Potchefstroom - Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Des van Rooyen, has commended the IEC for allowing registered voters in the Tlokwe and Ventersdorp Municipalities to update their address details.
All 113 voting stations in the area have been open since Saturday in a bid by the IEC to collect missing address details or to update address details on the voters’ roll.
Van Rooyen, who also chairs the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Elections, has been in Tlokwe since Thursday. He says the purpose of his visit is to oversee the IEC’s operations as well as to mobilise uninformed voters about the opening of voting stations this weekend.
Van Rooyen says that he can see that the IEC is striving to pull out all stops to implement the 2015 Constitutional Court order, which instructed the electorate commission to find missing details of addresses that appear on the voters’ roll in order to allow residents in the area to participate in this year’s Municipal Elections on 3 August.
“They’ve deployed their resources in Tlokwe, but also they’ve started what is known as mobile voting stations where they were targeting certain voting districts for people that don’t have addresses in those voting districts to come and update their details on the voters’ roll,” he says.
Van Rooyen reiterated that no new voters are being added on the voters’ roll. He also says that political parties should be helping out in raising awareness about this exercise that the IEC is doing by targeting possible voters.
