Qwaqwa - The Maluti-A-Phofung municipality needs to pay more attention to service delivery instead of hosting events.

This is according to Democratic Alliance councillor in the municipality, Alison Oates.

Oates’ comments follow the homecoming bash which was thrown for former SABC COO, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, at the Phuthaditjhaba Stadium in Qwaqwa at the weekend.

She says the municipality should not be hosting such events – if even – at the cost of tax payers.

“I mean on basic services we are battling. We owe Eskom R1.8 billion. Even with the recent rain not all people have got water at their houses. People in Intabazwe in Harrismith have been without water for ages. We should truly be focusing on basic service delivery before we focus on anything like this,” she said.

The marketing material of the event displayed the faces of Motsoeneng and the municipality’s mayor, Vusi Tshabalala, as well as the logo of the municipality, as to suggest that the municipality is the official sponsor of the celebration.

Oates said they were told the event is only sponsored by businessmen, however.

Hundreds were treated to entertainment by an all-star line-up which included musos such as Rebecca Malope, Dr Malinga, Jub Jub and Doc Shebeleza, and the municipality provided members of the public with free tickets.
