Bloemfontein - A 59-year-old man believed to be a government maintenance worker died yesterday after he apparently fell five storeys down a service shaft at the Oliver Tambo building in Bloemfontein.

ER24 spokesperson, Werner Vermaak, says paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after 15:00. He says they found another worker with his co-worker at the bottom of the shaft. It is understood that they were working on a pipe on the fifth floor of the building when one of them fell forward into the shaft. Vermaak says the worker who was with the deceased ran down to the basement and allegedly pulled his co-worker's body from the shaft. The man was declared dead at the scene.

He says police were at the scene and an investigation into the incident continues. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are still unknown.

OFM News received information that the deceased was an employee of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure. This has not been confirmed by provincial government, which is yet to comment on the incident.

In large buildings, pipes run from the top to the bottom of the structure in a  service shaft which is only a few meters wide.
