SAHRC in FS introduces child-friendly complaints procedure | News Article

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in the Free State launched a child-friendly complaint handling procedure, as well as a child-friendly space at their provincial office in Bloemfontein today.

The commission says the procedure will be simplified in order to allow children to lodge complaints independently.

Acting Provincial Manager, Shirley Mlombo, says the procedure was also developed in response to the growing number of violations of children’s rights.

She says the child-friendly space is essential to a new ethos the Commission has adopted on handling child complaints.

“As we are handling those complaints, we really need to handle them at the level of the child complainants that we serve. We had stakeholders who are working with children and we were able to discuss some of the broader issues that affect children and how as stakeholders we can all collaborate and consolidate our efforts to ensure that the rights of children are not confined to the pages of the constitution but become a live reality for most of our children.”
