Griekwastad - Deputy Minister of Police, Bongani Mkongi, is spearheading an anti-crime campaign in several areas in the Northern Cape province this weekend.

The Deputy Minister met with the police in Griekwastad this morning to outline the purpose of his visit.

Mkongi says his visit is mainly to mobilise the community to assist the police in fighting crime in their respective communities.

“I addressed the parade of the police to boost their morale and tell them that we as the political leadership are behind them and support them and that they must rely on our support.

We’ll be busy with roadblocks around here, stop and searches to make sure that no drug trafficking and human trafficking that is passing through the Northern Cape. We’re going to deal with illegal shebeens and we’re going to close them down. We’ll be giving blankets to the poor as to show that we as the police are human beings before we are police officers. Therefore we are part of the communities before we are part of the police stations.”

Mkongi said his visit forms part of the implementation of the department’s rural safety strategy.

He says he will be meeting with members of the anti-crime initiative, Wanya Tsotsi, in Galeshewe, Kimberley, on Sunday to see how they can find ways to curb crime in the area.
