Gender bias put under the spotlight in #WomensMonth | News Article
Sylvia Lucas

The Northern Cape Premier, Sylvia Lucas, says issues of women empowerment and power relations between women and their male counterparts are some of the critical issues that need to be tackled during this Women’s Month.

This, after reports that there is a lack of female representation in leadership positions in the country. Speaking ahead of the National Women’s Day event in her province, Lucas says the government and the society at large urgently need to work on more programmes to uplift the status of women.

Lucas says in an effort to address this challenge, the Northern Cape is increasingly appointing women in management and senior management positions.

“At the current moment our Chief State Law Adviser is a woman, and we have more than four Heads of the Departments who are women. In the Premiers’ office, particularly, the majority of the Senior Managers are women and we are still appointing more. Although more still needs to be done, we have appointed a number of women in strategic positions to also show the women out there that there are possibilities, that there is a room for development and we do want to appoint more women in our administration.”
