Stakeholders meet after Goldfields protests | News Article

A meeting was held between the local municipality, Harmony management and the Unemployment Forum today.

According to Harmony’s Max Manoeli, an agreement was reached on a special community development programme for the training of local residents in mining operating skills.

This comes after 61 suspects appeared in court over protest-related charges yesterday. Five of which have been revealed to be juveniles.

This is according to police’s Motantsi Makhele. The suspects were arrested after protests erupted over the lack of mining job opportunities in the Goldfields on Monday. The minors have been released into the custody of their parents while adults remain in custody until they reappear in court, next week.

Suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from public violence, robbery, theft and malicious damage to property as shops were allegedly looted and commuters were robbed during protest actions.
